A dr's visit and Swaddlegate Part I

Yesterday, Pookah went for his 6 month check up(yes, 2 whole weeks late).

He weighs 19 lbs 7 oz and is 26 3/4 inches long.

His little flat spot, while not getting any worse, is not much better.  But she doesn’t seem to be worried about it.  Evidently, is will round back out once he becomes more mobile.

Hmmmm.  I don’t know what else to do here.  He is never on his back unless he is sleeping.  During the day is always sitting up(on his own) , in the exersaucer, in his walker, or being bounced around by me, C-Dub or some grandparent.

My biggest concern this visit was the allergy and the eczema.  With the allergy, we decided to just wait it out and watch him to see if any more allergies to anything shows up.  I mean, I eat peanut butter all the time, and he seems just fine when I do.  I eat a TON of ice cream and I drink Lactaid and eat yogurt, so I don’t think it’s dairy either.  Who knows? Maybe it was a fluke?

With the ezcema, we got a new prescription steroid creme to deal with the flare ups.  Just my luck , he was having a bad one yesterday, so she got to see it in all of its glory. Lucky me, all 3 of her kids have it, so she had lots of practical advice.  She recommended Cetaphil creme for his skin after I mentioned that I tried all of the rest of them, and they didn’t seem to be working.  She recommend combining the steroid creme and the Cetaphil twice a day for 2 weeks.  I started last night and this morning, my child had the most beautiful skin of his life!!!! You can’t put the prescription steroid on his face or genitals or under his arms.  But I put a general over the counter 1% hydrocoritsone creme on with the Cetaphil and wala!  Beautiful kissable skin!!!!  And the itching was much better for my boy.  She also recommended giving him Benadryl at night when his flare ups are bad.  I’m going to hold up on that for now.

And then of course came the shots……….

Yeah.

Moving on to …….

Swaddlegate!

The pediatrician was not happy when I let it slip that he was still swaddled.  So.  I  decided to try it cold turkey this morning with his morning nap.

I put him down.  He smiled at me.   I left and closed the door.

He cooed, babbled and laughed for about 10 minutes.

Then, he cried( and I mean really cried) for 45 minutes.  I tried to go in and check on him at intervals, but every time I did, that made it worse.   Finally, after crying myself, I went and got him.

I couldn’t listen to it anymore.

So.  I officially know I am not a cry it out type of mom, and that my child is not a cry it out kind of child.  I’m not knocking Mom’s who are!!!! You guys have more willpower than I ever will!  I just happen to be weak in the area of facing his tears.  Always have been.  I’m going to have to work on that later………

But, since I have to unswaddle him, I will.

I’ll try again tonight when I have reinforcement in the form of C-Dub.  I have a plan that’s forming in my mind.  We’ll see if it works.  Otherwise, it’s going to be a loooooooog night. 🙁

we got rid of the swaddle at 4.5 months. I won't lie, it wasn't easy- it took about 6 weeks to get rid of the frequent waking. (though we'd get a couple of good nights here and there.) but part of getting over it seemed to be the ability to roll over, and to put the pacifier in his mouth himself. so maybe since pookah is older he'll be able to figure out what comforts him faster. I wish I would have pulled the plug at 12 weeks, think it might have happened faster. good luck-

My book talked about that, and they say that you just have to keep telling yourself that your baby loves you and wants to spend time with you, but he/she needs to sleep and learn to sleep by themselves more. That's what I did, and it worked for me! You and C-Dub need your rest too! I'm so sorry you're going through this. I know it sucks.

How about not swawaddling him so tight...making it looser each time and like the above post one arm, leg...etc. Poor Pookah. :( ...and you ;) GG

I was wondering about allergies myself, with breastfed babies. I eat peanut butter like it's chocolate, and earlier i forgot to wash my hands after a sandwich and Izzy's breath now reeks of peanut butter. I havent seen a reaction, but it still freaked me out! I've read that lots of moms have great success with a gradual unswaddling process, one arm out, then both arms out, etc. Good luck to you!
