How I Survived Our First Trip to the ER

It started innocently enough.

Pookah vomited.  And not just a little bit. Noooooooo. It was projectile, Exorcist vomiting.  Just ugly.  After I made sure he was OK, I was pissed to have to clean the carpet, the rocking chair, the ottoman and Pookah.  But he was fine, running everywhere, talking his head off.

About an hour later, he was cranky, and looking sleepy.  It took 15 minutes, but he went down for a nap.  I rushed about trying to cook and get ready for work.

But then, on the monitor, I heard it…….

“Cough Cough, Choke Choke”

I ran up to my room( he fell asleep in my bed and I left him there) and found him vomiting again.  I stripped him of his clothes again and this time, washed vomit out of his hair.  But 15 minutes later, again vomiting.  OK.

I’m freaking out a little.

I call the on call nurse.

She gives me the standard, give him Pedialyte and Gatorade and bland foods talk.

And he vomits while I’m on the phone with her.

Well, she says.  If he vomits 8 times in 8 hours, you have to bring him in.  Wait…..he’s already vomited 4 times in 2 hours………

Ok, by then I’m scared, I’m breaking down.  I call work and tell them I won’t be coming.  Crying.

By the time C-Dub got home 15 minutes later, Pookah had vomited again: #5

15 minutes later, again.  #6.

“Let’s go”

He vomited twice on the way to the hospital.  My baby was so pale, so listless, so lethargic.  He was just so pitiful.  He was still.  Pookah is NEVER still.

Luckily, we got fast tracked because of his age and symptoms I guess.

And he vomited while waiting for someone to see us.

After about 5 minutes, a nurse came in and gave Pookah Zofran.

He vomited once more and then seemed to perk up.

They wanted him to drink Pedialyte, but Pookah wasn’t having that.

Finally, the Nurse Practicioner offered him some apple juice in a juice box with a straw.

He downed it and kept it down.

( By the way, this was Pookah’s first attempt with a straw! I was soooo surprised when he  actually got it!)

So anyway, we got discharged about 15 minutes later and headed home.

Two hours later, ( we had to get the prescrpiton for the zofran and pick up “bland” baby foods and juice), we finally got home.  Pookah of course, is hungry by now, but since I couldn’t let him have any food, he fussed and fussed and fussed.

Finally in desperation, I offered him my now empty boob in an attempt to fool him into going to sleep.

It worked.

Sigh.

I’m exhausted.

Hi just dropped in from SITS. I had to comment because exactly the same thing happened to my son when he was 2 months old. He got over it almost straight away and the whole episode seemed to give him an incredible appetite. That carried on into later life. Good luck and hope you get some sleep. It's all worth it in the end. :)
