Pookah vs the allergies……….

Yesterday, we went to the allergy doctor.

After explaining every reaction and my observations that they seem only to happen when he eats products that say: contains wheat, he agreed that i had proven my case and that it was time to skin test Pookah to understand what we were dealing with.

The skin test went like this: I took off Pookah’s shirt, and held him against my chest with his back towards the nurse.  She then placed the test against his skin.

Pookah didn’t flinch.

I had to hold him for 3 minutes to make sure that it didn’t drip away or that he didn’t rub it or scratch his back.

I could see that there were definitely raised areas on his back, and thought : well shit, he is  allergic to wheat.

The doctor came back, and said well.

“This shows that he has some reactions to wheat, soy, eggs and peanuts.”

Silence.

What??????

Even he looked surprised and confused.  He then proceded to explain to me( who is just sitting there shell shocked while Pookah ran around the room with the evidence on his back) that sometimes the skin test will give you a false positive.  But for now, he wanted us to do a blood test which would help him make the definative diagnosis. And come back next Tuesday to go over the results.  His advice: keep Pookah’s epi pen on me at all times.  So Pookah and I went to the children’s hospital for his blood draw ( they give numbing cream before they stick kids) and hopefully the results will be ready next week.

So for those that don’t understand:

Wheat, Eggs, Soy, and Peanuts.

My God.  What do I feed my child?

Having allergic reactions to food is quite difficult to handle especially with kids. This is because you have to closely monitor what they will eat to prevent anaphylaxis that may lead to death.

Aww. I'm sure you'll figure out what he can and can't have and ease into it with no problem.

My sister has 3 daughters, all of whom have allergies to eggs and peanuts. I'm not sure about wheat. They can eat soy however. She switched the family to a vegan diet in order to manage. Cutting out meat was decided on for other reasons, but she is able to feed them nutritious foods without eggs and peanuts. She's had to raise them to always ask her permission before they eat somethign that was not prepared by her. She checkes ingreadient lists religiously.

I hope the pookah's allergies aren't as severe as the early tests indicate.
