She’ll Put a Spell on You….

Watching Scandal on Thursday, I heard Nina Simone in the background.

I love Nina Simone.

The first time I heard Nina Simone, I was in college.  The oh so intelligent  existential  pretentious  22 year old that I was dating at the time would play Nina Simone and smoke little Bidi cigarettes while he and his friends debated politics, Biggie Smalls and the meaning of life.

It’s a wonder that I even grew to like her.

But I would find myself randomly humming a tune, stopping when I saw it in the record store( we used to have those you know).  And finally, I gave in.

There is just something about that voice. Something about the feeling behind it. The smoothness of it. The rawness of her voice that has always appealed to me.

So I leave you this weekend with the homework to go and LISTEN to Nina Simone.
Light up some incense, get you some wine, put on your red light.

And Listen with your heart, your mind, your soul.

And enjoy you some Nina.

Nina gives me life, I stumbled upon her one day in Pandora and never looked back.

I bought a Nina Simone cd several years ago. I think it's still wrapped in plastic. I knew that she had a rich and beautiful voice, but I have no idea why I haven't opened it up. I think I'll take it with me on Monday to work. If it helps my mood in the office, I'll have you and Nina to thank. :-)

I have Nina Simone's Greatest Hits! I'm going to take your advice and take a listen since it's been a while, I'll light a candle instead of incense or red light :) and sip on some wine! Thanks for the great suggestion?
