When finances get in the way of friendships

It’s no secret over here that I have been going through a rough time with my finances over here.  But, really, none of my far away friends know all of the gory details.

So when my long time friend asked me to be in her wedding a couple of weeks ago, I said yes.

Prematurely

You see, I didn’t think it through.

The dress had to be ordered right away.  The wedding is on New Year’s Day and it takes 6 to 12 weeks for it to get here.

I just don’t have the money in that short of a time frame.  I am already going to shell out dough to GO to the wedding, and to order her a gift.  And I need to be dressed for the wedding( a dress, shoes).

Sigh.

I’m a coward and sent her an email rather than call her.

I used the excuse that she is at work to do it.  Can’t have personal calls at work!

Whatever.

I’m a coward.

A looser too.

You are not a loser. These are tough times!

There is nothing wrong with not having the money – dress, shoes, makeup, hair, travel and gifts all adds up. At least you had the good grace to not bow out at the last minute. Our best man at our wedding bailed out because of finances a week or so before the wedding. Had he informed us he was having financial issues earlier, we might have tried to work something out.

She shouldn’t be mad anyway b/c she clearly asked you at the last minute! Isn’t it a little late to be getting bridesmaids for a Jan wedding? It is almost December!

Um yeah, I’m riding with Keyalus on this on. Did the wedding just pop up this week?? Hmm…..
But, back to the point, no, you’re not a loser. You took a realistic look at what you could and couldn’t do over the next 6 weeks, and realized that you had to back out. If she’s a real friend she’ll understand.

Ummm, yes, She wanted me to be a bridesmaid after one of the original ones dropped out. She “claims” she wanted me from the beginning, but her wedding coordinator said no. Hmmmmmmm.
