Shower Myths Busted: Why I need to give up my hot shower

Tracking PixelThank you to Dove for partnering with Everyday Eyecandy on this post. Skin care is important, especially to women in our 40s. I was compensated for this post. All opinions are mine.

shower myths

I love a good long scorching hot shower. Something about it relaxes and soothes me. Didn’t your mother tell you to use HOT water when bathing? LOL! But since I entered my 40s, I noticed that my skin has changed. It’s been DRY and itchy. I tried all sorts of things I found on the internet.

Nothing worked!

So, I set out to learn more about my changing skin and discovered a recent Dove survey that found that 86% of dermatologists report that the “squeaky clean” feeling means your skin might be stripped of the moisture and nutrients it needs.

Say what?

Further research revealed that it might not be my age, but my hot shower that was causing all of the problems! I came across 4 Shower Myths from Dove Dermatologist, Dr. Mona Gohara that I wanted to share with you. The difference between these shower myths and the truth has made me take a good long look at my own skincare habits and vow to make changes.

Myth #1: Hot Water is Best

shower myths

Like I said before, I love a good long scorching hot shower. Something about it relaxes me, soothes me and makes me feel CLEAN. But according to Dove Dermatologists, hot water can actually be bad for your skin! Hot water strips the skin’s natural moisturizing oils, leaving it dry and sensitive. Instead, use warm water in the shower and see if your skin starts to feel more hydrated.

Myth #2: Rough scrubbing is effective

I love my loofah and scrubs to exfoliate. I learned this somewhere in my 20s and have been doing it ever since. But Dove Dermatologists say that while exfoliating is an important part of your skin cleansing routine, it’s also important that you don’t overdo it. Harsh scrubs and loofahs can do more damage than good! Instead look for a scrub or cleanser that exfoliates and nourishes skin.

Myth #3 Tight Skin is Normal

This has always been my standard for clean skin! Turns out, I was wrong! A recent Dove survey found that 85% of dermatologists report that women are surprised to hear that they should avoid making their skin feel “squeaky clean.” Basically, if your skin feels tight after washing, you are using the wrong products! Unlike basic soap bars, Dove Beauty Bar gently but effectively cleanses, leaving soft, smooth skin. It cleans beautifully and won’t strip away skin’s moisture like soap can. Dove doesn’t leave behind that dry, tight feeling that ordinary soaps can, which can be a sign of dry skin damage.

Myth #4 You don’t need to moisturize oily skin.

This is a big misconception! And since I have oily skin, I admit this is the myth I’ve fallen for most of my life. No matter what your skin type, you ALWAYS need hydration to keep your skin looking healthy. The Dove Beauty Bar is formulated with the brand’s signature ¼ moisturizing cream with skin natural lipids to help replenish nutrients lost during the cleansing process and leave skin feeling soft and smooth. It’s one of the reasons Dove is the #1 Dermatologist recommended Bar. When it comes to your skincare routine, if you settle for less, you might not realize what you are compromising. I want my skin to continue to be healthy and beautiful well into my 40s and 50s and beyond.

I don't care what the studies say, there's no way I'm EVER giving up my hot hot showers. LOL I just found out that everything I know about showers is a lie. I guess it's time for me to give up my Salux cloth for exfoliating everyday.
