Of Ear Infections and Milk……….

Pookah went to the Doctor this morning.

And the main point is:

Pookah’s ear infection has gotten WORSE!!!

(That sound you hear is me crying my eyeballs out over here.)

Our wonderful Pediatrician was as surprised as me.  (“I am surprised and appalled.” I believe were her exact words.)

So, he is now on ANOTHER antibiotic: a baby Z-Pack.

Sigh.

And if this doesn’t work, he has to get a shot of antibiotics.

Sigh.

It doesn’t help that he seems to have his worst cold EVER right now too.  Complete with coughing, runny/stuffy nose and MAJOR irritability.  And of course, he still couldn’t get his 12 month vaccinations or his flu shot today.

Sigh.

As for the milk…….

She suggested that it is probably a lactose intolerance vs an allergy because he can eat cheese and yogurt with no problem.  But like me, she thought he was a little too early for it.  But hey, my child is just advanced I guess( how come I’m not happy?)

So anyway, she suggested to give him Lactaid.  Which I already drink, instead of Soy, Rice or Almond milk.  She said that she has noticed that the kids who drink soy, rice or almond milk tend to be smaller children.  And sometimes doctors tend to want to label them “failure to thrive” because of it.  The problem, she said was that there wasn’t as much fat in the soy, rice or almond milk that there is in regular whole milk.

Hmmmmm.

I personally had been reluctant to try him on soy because of the studies out there that say that it delays puberty in boys, they could grow breasts, the voice doesn’t go as deep….

Really.

Just the idea that it MIGHT happen makes me REALLY cautious.

So anyway, I’ve decided that I’m going to wait until after the ear infection clears up before we change ANYTHING else in his diet.

So, Pookah and Similac Sensitive will be friends for at least until the new year I think.

(And that is the sound of my wallet weeping.)

If only I still had breastmilk………

I can't count how many times I've sat in the doctor's office due to ear infections and infections in general with my son. Eventually, he had to get a shot and everything has been good since then. [knocks on wood]

I don't give my children whole milk because it causes them to be irregular. They aren't lactose intolerant, but it sometimes causes them to get constipated. I've tried the Lactaid, as well as soy and almond milk, and luckily, the kids enjoy it.

Good luck!
