When my son was diagnosed with a wheat allergy many years ago, I had to change our entire lifestyle to make sure we had a gluten-free kitchen.   It has taken me many years to find gluten-free alternatives for a well-stocked pantry.   Some will tell you that the best option for anyone who has to eat gluten-free is always to make things from scratch, as a working mom, I don’t have that kind of time. Through trial and lots of error, we’ve discovered our favorite gluten-free options for the best gluten-free pantry staples that keep everyone safe and happy.

The Foundation: Gluten-Free Flours

Flour is the backbone of many recipes, so having a variety of gluten-free flours on hand is essential.

Let’s start with All Purpose Flour:

All Purpose Gluten Free Flour Blend

You will need a good all-purpose gluten-free flour blend. The good news is that there a lot of options!

My favorite all purpose gluten free flour blends are Cup4Cup and Bobs Red Mill 1 to 1 flours.

Cup4Cup All Purpose Flour has always provided consistent baking results, contains xanthan gum ( an ingredient used to add structure and elasticity to gluten-free baked goods. )and it isgreat for gluten-free baking and adding to recipes as needed. The versatility of this one makes it one of my favorite brands.

Where to find: Online ( I have a running sub from Amazon,) but it can also be found at Walmart and Whole Foods.

Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 baking Flour is a good idea for those recipes where you simply want to substitute a gluten free flour for a wheat flour.

Where to Find it: it can always be found in most local grocery stores.

Here are a few other gluten-free flours to consider and keep on hand.  These gluten-free flours serve as the building blocks for a wide range of recipes, from pancakes and cookies to bread and pastries.

Rice Flour
Almond Flour
Coconut Flour
Potato Flour

Binders and Thickeners: Holding It All Together

Gluten acts as a binder in traditional baking, so you’ll need suitable replacements to maintain the structure of your gluten-free creations. Here are two essential options:

Xanthan Gum

Guar Gum

Both xanthan gum and guar gum serve as dependable binders and thickeners, ensuring your gluten-free recipes maintain their integrity.

Note: Take a look at your all purpose flours: most will have xanthan gum as an ingrediant and are not needed. But if you are making your own flour mix, you will need one of these binding agents.

Sweeteners: Adding Deliciousness

Creating delicious gluten-free treats often requires sweeteners that are both flavorful and safe. Consider these options:

Maple Syrup:
Honey

Leavening Agents: Rising to the Occasion

Achieving the desired rise and texture in gluten-free baking can be challenging. With these leavening agents, you can enjoy perfectly risen and textured gluten-free bread and baked goods.

Baking Powder

Yeast
