So, I get to work this morning.

Dragging as usual.

There are two patients ready for me to see.

My nurse manager says hey we’ve got to go see Mary(human resources)

We go in.  The chief executive officer, the head of human resources, and my nurse manager.

Can you guess what happened next?

They laid me off.

Said my position had been eliminated.

Here I am 7 1/2 months pregnant, and they laid me off.

Do you really expect me to get another job at this time?

No one is going to hire a woman who is about to pop in 2 months.

Lord have mercy.

What am I going to do?

  1. I did some research on getting laid off while pregnant because I was expecting it (they waited till I returned from leave) and in most states you would have a case of wrongful termination….you should really look into it.
If your performance is good , you have never been warned that your job was in jeapordy (sp?) , and there are other (non pregnant) poor performers that were kept….you have grounds for wrongful termination on the grounds that you are pregnant and they did not want to pay for your leave…. and could collect a pretty settlement….
I am so very sorry that you are dealing with this. As hard as it will be, don’t let the stress over take you. That growing baby is too important to let this impact your health.

  2. I am so sorry! That is awful, and it sounds terribly fishy to me. I would definitely look into the wrongful termination stuff. It looks very bad for them that they are laying off a 7.5 month pregnant woman with no good reason. They probably just don’t want to pay for your maternity leave. Good luck, and keep us posted.

    1. They claimed it was for “business” reasons. It is fishy. They kept saying that all the business models said we were doing the same, no drop off in business. Then last week, they restructured all of the dr’s schedules(making them take off one day a week). But other than that, they just kept syaing that business was good. I mean, damn, they could have just told me not to come back after maternity leave! and what really gets me is that I QUIT my other job about a month ago because I finally figured it was safe!

  3. I am sorry…it sucks…same thing happened to my husband last week. They said it was financial…yeah…cause we’re having twins in a few months and if they did it any closer to my due date they would have looked bad…

  4. WHAT?!?! Very very FISHEY!!

I’m so sorry, this is the last thing you need right now. I say FIGHT, FIGHT WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT!!

  5. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Medical – that’s top priority. Can you get on DH’s or get state assistance?

  6. Damn that sucks! Really sorry that they did that. Silver lining is that you have some time off prior to baby’s arrival and get paid by state unemployment. Can you get med insurance through your husb? They can take you back at your old hospital if you really want to work. Terrible timing!

  7. Find a lawyer who specializes in employment law and talk to him/her about possible wrongful termination. Most will give you a free consulation. If there’s a case, some will take it on contingency.

File for unemployment immediately. Or see if your doctor can put you on disability (that pays more).

    Sucks.

My “position was eliminated” on 8/31, so I know sort of how you feel… without the pregnancy, though.

    I’m so sorry. 🙁

  8. Also, find out about how long your medical benefits will go until they term and how much COBRA will cost. COBRA is about 1/3 of what the normal cost is (according to the lawyer I consulted), so I’m waiting for the paperwork to find out just how much that will run me.

  9. I can’t believe they fired you! That’s just wrong. Did they even give you a severance package? Definitely look into discrimination and wrongful dismissal. Not sure how it works in the states but in Canada we have major laws against this kind of thing.

  10. Here from LFCA.

My husband was laid off when I was four and a half months pregnant. It was the most stressful time in our lives up until that point (up until our baby passed away). There’s already so much uncertainty and nervousness with pregnancy (and hormones!), and adding to that is just cruel. I am so sorry, and hope that you find something soon.
