iPhoneography: Editing with your iphone.

In today’s edition of iPhoneography, I want to talk about editing with your iPhone. Specifically with VSCOCAM. My favorite photography app.

Most of the photos in my instagram feed are edited with VSCOCAM.  And really, I don’t do a lot with it, but the trick with editing photos with an iPhone app is to enhance the photo. Not overwhelm it with filters and special effects.

Take this photo right here.

I had a vision of how I wanted this to look.  I wanted to capture that light coming through the trees and bathing the scene with that golden light.  I took the photo with my native iPhone camera app.  And while I caught the light, I wasnt’ quite able to capture the colors that I wanted. The colors that are there in real life, just unable to be captured within the limits of JUST using my iPhone.

So after taking the photo, I bought it into the VSCOCAM app.

The first thing I did was go and apply my  favorite filter C3/Vibrant.

Next, the photo is underexposed. So I upped my exposure to +3

Photos that have a lot of haze/light usually do well with a little bit of contrast. I added +1

Then, to capture that warmth that I felt, and saw, I adjusted the temperature slider to +3

Last but not least, I sharpened it just slightly +1

And saved to my camera roll and uploaded to instagram. Here is the final photo

And that took me maybe 5 minutes.

Amazing what your phone can do!

What are your favorite photography apps? What’s your workflow like?

  1. I don’t have an iphone but I do use picsart app for my droid other than that I edit on the computer save in my dropbox and share on social media

  2. I love this workflow! It’s simple and straight to the point. I agree, I like to enhance the photo, not add a lot of filters to it, unless I’m in a silly / playful mood. I’m trying to move away from taking pictures with my iPhone, but this just makes me want to play with it a bit more!

  3. Love the changes you made with some simple editing on your iPhone! I need to find a similar app for Android because I would love to enhance versus use a lot of filters.

  4. Thanks for sharing how easy editing with your iPhone can be. I need to download this app, as my pictures usually do not look that great when I use the native camera. I need something to spruce them up with like you have done here.

  5. Nice! I don’t use anything fancy, but I have gotten the hang of instacollage. I’m no photograph editor but I do use it when I want to send a cute text of my little guy to the grandparents.
