Thank you to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for Sponsoring this conversation. All opinions are my own.
In the spring time, Pookah’s allergies never want to let go and despite the allergy shots, the meds, and the inhaler, we almost always end up needing an unplanned doctor’s visit….after school Pookahs pediatrician is 45 minutes to an hour away from us. On a GOOD day.
But he has been with them since he was born and I don’t want to go through the hassle of changing doctors. But that leaves us with a dilemma. You see, Pookah almost always needs to see a doctor either after school or on the weekend. Which makes an unplanned visit to his doctor almost impossible since they will most likely be closed by the time we get there.
Enter Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Urgent Care.
When Pookah came home from school last month complaining of a headache, ringing in his ears and not being able to hear well, I immediately knew he had to go to see someone. We have been to the emergency room at Children’s here in Atlanta and have always had nothing but the best care. But being a nurse, I knew we didn’t need the ER this time and I knew that urgent care would be a good choice.
We decided to head to Children’s Urgent Care Center not too far from our home. Children’s locations have a pediatrician and staff that are specially trained to diagnose and treat children from 0 to 21 years old. Walk in hours are available 7 days a week INCLUDING evening and holidays.
They even provide the option to save your spot online if you like, which allows you to pick a time to arrive to begin the check in process. I looked online and saw they had a wait time of 40-45 minutes which was perfect since it would take us 30 minutes to get there.( rush hour). I “saved my spot” online before we left and headed out.
It was really busy, and even though we had saved a spot, I still expected a wait. But within 25 minutes of our arrival and check in, we were seen by the pediatrician on staff. I loved how the pediatrician asked HIM what was wrong, was polite and had a sense of humor despite how busy they were. Strep throat was ruled out, but he was quickly diagnosed with a double ear infection AND a sinus infection!! His prescriptions were submitted electronically to the pharmacy closest to our house and we were back at home with meds on board and me tucking Pookah in for a snuggle.
It was honestly one of the best experiences we have had at an urgent care center, and I can assure you due to Pookah’s allergies, we have been to a lot of them! If you have kids and live in the Atlanta Area, think about using Children’s urgent care centers for your child’s non-emergency care when your doctor is not available. Children’s urgent care facilities have lab and x-ray services to quickly diagnose your child’s minor illnesses and injuries.

Children’s urgent care facilities have lab and x-ray services to immediately diagnose the child’s minor illnesses and injuries. I have known a neighbor whose daughter was headed to the hospital one night because of pain the tooth that the parents had been ignoring for a while now. Thankfully for then them the 24/7 emergency care worked; therefore, you as parents should always know about the 24/7 emergency care near you. because such instances are uncalled for.

What an awesome way to make medicine and treatment more accessible to the kids that need it. I think it's awesome that you have this option for the kids. It's definitely going to make any parent's life easier and give them peace of mind.

It's awful when our children get sick. It's nice to know that you have the option of an urgent care center.

I applaud the choices you made in the situation! Too many people abuse the ER which in turn, makes it lose its emergency status. Urgent Care is a great option and it sounds like you guys were well cared for!
